People's Strange Logic.

Their letters are in yellow, whilst mine are in black & white.

First of all, bob, i have to say that i have so much respect for you - you've got so much, dare i say, conviction in what you do (and more importantly don't) believe in, and a lot of courage to stand beside those convictions. i envy you for your courage.

It didn't come as much of a suprise to me when i read that you had been raised a christian and turned away from religion when you were 30... i am 23, was raised a christian (church every sunday and wednesday, as well as christian school, blech!) and for me it was around age 18 that i started questioning my faith, and coming to realize that my beliefs... weren't really mine.

I guess the main reason for this letter is to ask you this question: how do you deal with all the nasty letters, all the nasty looks you surely get... geez, how many times has someone thrown a punch at you? and how do you smile about it?

Christians do a whole lot of whining about persecution for their faith and whatnot, but it seems to me those of us that do not have faith undergo much more severe persecution.

Do you have any advice on how to deal with people who feel it's all the more reason to preach at you once you've told them you don't believe in god? i guess if i had your sense of humor, i wouldn't have any trouble at all, but... i just don't see how you can deal with so much hate and keep an upbeat, positive attitude.

Anyway - seriously, keep up the good work. and take care, really. hope all is well, hope to be sending off for those magnets as soon as i get the cash :) hope to talk to you later, bob.

Rachel,
I'd be happy to explain myself and how I do what I do as best I can. First of all I have many reasons for why I like to do what I do and have no problem putting up with people's angry emails and the food they hurl at me from across the room. Let me list them out for you.

#1. I know how to make it funny. Yes, you're right. It is easier if you have a sense of humor about it and not take yourself too seriously. That's where they fail and I triumph! And triumphing is loads of fun.

#2. I know I'm right. The more I learn and the older I get the more I know that I'm right. I love the study of evolution, and science fascinates me. Also, I have just always been an extremely logical thinker, to a fault even! Making sense is my bag.

#3. I don't care what strangers think. Especially strangers on the internet! Rachel, if there's one thing I've learned in the past 7 years of running this site, it's that the comments, promises and complaints people send in an email are completely and totally empty. People will do and say things in an email to a stranger without any thought or regard, and I read them as such. Little girls will scream that they're going to murder me, and some other person will call me a perverted demon, and another will say that they love me like a brother despite my evil ways, all without having the slightest idea of who I am. They're just empty words over the internet that people say without any intension of following through on anything they're saying. Anyone who takes them too seriously takes themselves too seriously.

#4. I've turned these strange exchanges into a full time, money-making job! That's right! And if that's not enough motivation for me to take on those nasty letters then I don't know what is.

Thank you for the question, Rachel. I'd also like to add that it really isn't that bad. I live in New York City, so people aren't swinging their fists at me everywhere I go. Out here no one gives a rat's ass what you believe just as long as you don't get in the way of what they're doin'. Out here being an Jesus-bashing Satan in a tux isn't as outlandish as it would be if I were in, say, Texas! The bastards out there would eat me alive, poop me out and drag their excrement behind a pickup truck!

That's why I love it here.

“People who are not believers of God, always question everything, but sadly, they question what is TRUE.”

I hope you know what you are doing. One thing is to play around, and one thing is to know how far you are going. People like you...have no empathy for others. With all respect, prayers do work and God is alive. Anyways, your web site is not that important. People who are not believers of God, always question everything, but sadly, they question what is TRUE.

The true lies in the heart. "Faith and Reason" -- Einstein

Glittstarlet428@aol.com

But in my heart I believe you are wrong. So that makes what I believe true too!

Believing stuff with just your heart is the fun easy way to say anything's true!

Hooray!!

“do u go the big bang or something?”

thanks bra. so what do u live for/ die for? and wat about the universe? do u go the big bang or something?

Ben Stocker
onairhq@bigpond.com

The most important things to me are people. That's what I live and die for. People. I realize that without people life wouldn't be worth living. They are what's most important. As for how I believe the universe came to be, I'm not exactly sure. Science has its theories, and some of them make a lot of sense once you study the rules nature follows. Yes, the Big Bang is a very likely solution to the beginning of the universe. A much more likely solution than an everlasting wizard who can make universes with his magic powers.

Is your most important thing really the wizards/gods you bow to? I can't imagine what sort of thing that is, especially if you don't even know for sure if they exist. What gods do you pretend are true?

“he wanything intelligent or ordered cas more intelligent than us cos everything come from something but omes from something more intelligent, thats why we cant understtand him.”

thats so rad. I love people. life is people. the greatest love is the dude who will die for another. word up bob. u cant be living more to love ppl. including yourself. and come to think about it, who cares about the origin of the universe? i recon ppl waste their lives arguing about crap like that. im alive today.

and yeah some dude once made everything. he was more intelligent than us cos everything come from something but anything intelligent or ordered comes from something more intelligent, thats why we cant understtand him. chaos sure cant produce anything smarter than itself. u cant bomb a junkyard and all the bits fall into place as a house unless someone smart puts them there. I seriously recon thats a more likely "solution" to the universe thing. do u recon thats kind of logical?

Ben Stocker
onairhq@bigpond.com

Hey Ben,
I don't think I totally understand your armchair theorizing. You say that anything intelligent or ordered must come from something more intelligent? By your own words then God was created by something more intelligent. That theory of yours exposes precisely where all the gods have come from. Us! We made them and we're more intelligent than they are, by your own words!

Your theory also means we're smarter than computers. I mean, we made computers so that means we're smarter than they are? Hey Ben, I'm thinking that it's your thought process that's a bombed junkyard of disordered chaos! Hahaha! Oh, I'm just fuckin' around with you and your goofy theories.

Ben, of course intelligence comes from something smaller, then grows and grows, evolving into something more complicated! Haven't you studied evolution? Even our own inventions start as something small and simple, then progress and become more complicated as we make them more efficient, faster and stronger. Pick any invention of man and see how it began as something simpler than it is now.

Pardon my French, but reading your emails I'm thinkin' you're not the guy I should be goin' to for information on how life works and where intelligence comes from, and especially how to spell! Yikes!

“I was trying to find some material for my Sunday school class when I can upon your website.”

Subject: first time on your web site

Hello Bob! I was trying to find some material for my Sunday school class when I can upon your website.

The picture of Jesus on the cross and dressing him up was bad enough, but then you also have the clip at the top right that states "your prayers did nothing".

I am sorry you have such a cavalier attitude about what Jesus did for us on the cross, and that you do not realize Jesus died on the cross for our sins.

I will be praying for you Bob.

I guess I just don't understand why you choose to teach make-believe stories as truth to children. To me that's not what we adults should be doing. Instead we should be teaching true, proven facts to children. Those are a lot more helpful and useful to them as they grow older and become adults themselves.

I'll be wishing upon a star for you, Carol.
Thank you for the email.
Bob

“explain to me what on your website is true and proven?”

If your trying to teach children, please explain to me what on your website is true and proven?

That dying and going to paradise isn't a sacrafice we need to thank someone for doing.

Bob

“The bible states that God blinds the minds of unbelievers (see Bible verse below)”

Thank you so much Bob for taking the time to answer me. The bible states that God blinds the minds of unbelievers (see Bible verse below). If you seek the truth, God will show it to you. I will be praying that you will search for the truth about Jesus and will find it.
2 Corinthians 4:3-4 (New International Version)
3) And even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing. 4) The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.

Deuteronomy 4:29 (New King James Version)

But from there you will seek the Lord your God, and you will find Him if you seek Him with all heart and with all your soul.

Praying for you..

Carol Conaway
conaway@elcaminochurch.org

To me it appears that the bible blinds the minds of believers. In fact, you seem to believe anything that book tells you no matter how much sense it doesn't make, or however many excuses it takes to pretend it's true.

Your response here is a perfect example. You didn't respond to my statement at all (eternal paradise is a sacrifice?), but instead you just quoted a bunch of unrelated scripture that instructs me to believe without question or thought.

So, I am still wishing upon a star for you, Carol. I am wishing that your search for the truth about wishing upon stars will continue and you will find it, for the stars state that non believers in star wishing are blinded by a veil, and your minds are clouded with false truth about wish-making.

Bob

“The reason I did not answer your question directly...”

The reason I did not answer your question directly about paradise, is because I do not understand exactly where you are coming from. From your website and what we discussed so far, I assumed you do not believe in heaven or Jesus. That is why I sent you the scriptures I did. I thought if I explained, you would not understand because you do not want to understand. I was wrong to assume, please forgive me.

So,

Do you believe in heaven? Do you believe Jesus died on the cross for our sins so that we could go to heaven? If not, what do you believe?

Carol Conaway
conaway@elcaminochurch.org

You assumed I didn't believe in the bible so you sent me bible scripture? That's what you said, right?

No, I don't believe any of that stuff is true. It's make-believe stories that sound make-believe.
I am an atheist. I believe that the gods us humans have made-up throughout the ages aren't real anywhere except in our heads. So instead of believing in gods and eternal paradise and messiahs I believe that we humans have to figure it out on our own as we have been, without super-beings in the sky to assist us. I believe in evolution, and the methods of science.

Does that clarify my stance?
Bob

“Evolution and science are not subjects I am comfortable discussing. However...”

Yes it does clarify what you believe, thanks for sharing it with me.

And yes, I did share Bible scriptures with you assuming you do not believe in the Bible because the Bible is God speaking to us. Regardless of whether you believe the Bible or not, God does speak to us using the Bible and he can use it for good. That is why I shared it with you.

So, I will continue to pray for you.

Evolution and science are not subjects I am comfortable discussing. However, the minister of our church is very knowledgeable about these subject. If you would like to hear his views, please e-mail him at rushing@elcaminochurch.org.

I have really enjoyed our e-mails. Thank you so much for sharing.

Carol Conaway
conaway@elcaminochurch.org

So you expect me to not only be impressed that you believe what you believe without knowing any of the science behind it, but you also want me to email your minister and say to him, "Hey, could you please teach me about science and evolution using old ancient scribes instead of modern science books and lab tests by educated scientists?"

Thanks for your insight, Carol, but I think I'm going to stick with getting my education from people who study from science books.

Ooh! I have an idea! Maybe you could wish to your super being for you to somehow get smarter with your passing-the-buck method of education?
Bob
